Sci-Fi & Fantasy

The Speculative Fiction & Fantasy category contains the foundational texts of the genre — the works published before the term "science fiction" existed as a marketing category, before fantasy was a shelf label in a bookstore, before the modern publishing apparatus imposed genre conventions on what were, originally, philosophical and social thought experiments in narrative form.

H.G. Wells did not write science fiction. He wrote sociological extrapolations in novel form. Mary Shelley did not write horror. She wrote a philosophical examination of creation, responsibility, and alienation. Jules Verne did not write adventure fiction. He wrote technically rigorous speculations on the engineering possibilities of his era. OFFREADS holds complete collections of all three, along with dozens of their contemporaries who shaped the literary tradition.

The Star Wars Legends collection deserves separate mention as the single largest contiguous licensed fiction archive in the vault: over 400 novels, novelizations, junior tie-ins, short story anthologies, and reference guides covering the complete Legends continuity from 1977 through its decanonization in 2014. This collection is assembled as a complete literary universe, not a selection.

Gothic literature, classical mythology in translation, early pulp science fiction from Amazing Stories and Astounding, and the complete works of major early fantasy authors round out the category. These are not curated "best of" selections. They are complete archives of the genres they represent.
